MK I

MK I was created from a simple premise: an object used every day should not be temporary. It should carry weight, age with its environment and remain long after the technology around it becomes obsolete. Rather than treating diffusion as another disposable appliance, MK I approaches it as architecture — a permanent steel object built to hold heat, release scent and become part of the physical language of a space. Its mass, texture and visible manufacturing layers are intentional; the process of making it remains present in the final form.

MK I is produced using Selective Laser Melting (SLM), a form of metal additive manufacturing within the Laser Powder Bed Fusion family, producing a dense metallic structure with mechanical properties approaching those of conventionally manufactured metal components when correctly processed. This allows MK I to incorporate complex internal geometry, controlled wall thickness and forms that would be difficult or inefficient to produce through conventional machining or casting. Steel was selected for permanence. It resists deformation, environmental degradation and repeated thermal cycling far more effectively than common polymer housings. With appropriate use and maintenance, the structural body of MK I is capable of remaining functional for decades. There is no fundamental reason for the object to become obsolete simply because time passes.

MK I is therefore both diffuser and material study: digital geometry translated directly into permanent metal, manufactured through one of the most advanced forms of contemporary additive production and designed to outlive the category it belongs to.
